Flu Season: Why You Should Get Vaccinated Now (2026)

The Northern Territory (NT) government is urging Territorians to get vaccinated against influenza (flu) as cases rise in urban and rural areas of Darwin, Katherine, and East Arnhem. This call to action is particularly timely as the dry season approaches, bringing with it increased visitor traffic and large-scale community events. With a later start to the flu season this year, the NT is experiencing a surge in cases, hospitalisations, and even deaths. The numbers are alarming: since the beginning of 2026, there have been 775 confirmed flu cases, 218 hospitalisations, and tragically, 2 deaths. This is a stark contrast to the same period in 2025, when there were 3052 reported cases, 785 hospitalisations, and 11 deaths. The flu is highly contagious, spreading through respiratory droplets produced during coughing or sneezing. Symptoms often appear abruptly and can include tiredness, fever, headache, chills, sore throat, loss of appetite, cough, runny nose, and sneezing. To prevent the spread, individuals are advised to stay home when unwell, practice good hand hygiene, maintain physical distance, and wear masks. The flu vaccine is now available and is recommended for those at higher risk of complications. This includes all children aged 6 months to under 5 years, adults aged 65 and over, pregnant women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 6 months and over, and individuals with specific medical conditions that increase the risk of severe flu. By getting vaccinated, Territorians can protect themselves and contribute to the overall health of the community, especially during this critical time.
